LOG CABIN – painted, working on covered porch, before putting the piece on the base and doing the landscaping… 4/22/2017.
L
David Winter scale cottage made with colored Sculpy
A couple of shots of a miniature log cabin I am working on (4/15/2017)
It is 10″ long and 5/12″ wide. I made the house shape of balsa, and the logs are rolled Das clay. It will go on a 8/12×11″ landscape base of Masonite primed with gesso. The figure is just for scale (54mm) and is not meant for this display.
This is the first time I have worked with Das. It is weird; not a ceramic clay; I think it is a paper-based clay with a glue bonding medium (white glue?) At any rate it takes some getting used to after using wet clay. It takes a long time to air-dry, so I put it in the oven on low temp for an hour or so and that made it harden up. This has been a bit of a challenge, figuring how to notch and join the logs. But a fascinating subject to me.

Two Sided Silicone Molds
There is a better technique for two sided molds in silicone rubber than building a barrier and keying; especially for smaller parts and figures. I used this technique to produce a whole line of gift-ware figures.
You simply cover your entire piece in solid rubber. You assure yourself of it’s position by marking the base beyond the box the rubber is poured into. The figure or item to be molded is placed on a mount; this acts as the pour spot for the plastic.
I made ,my framing box out of foam-core stuck together with hot glue gun. After you pull the walls off of the rubber you will be able to locate where the seam-line will be by the ball point pen lines drawn on the inside of the box before the rubber is poured — the silicone will pick up the ink. You then use an exacto knife to cut the rubber carefully until the tip of the blade meets the model inside. The slices are done carefully but purposely jagged__this is enough of a “key” for the rubber to go back together in the same position. Also, you do not need to gut the mold completely in half. Just cut it enough that it will split apart enough to release the part inside. You can cut some thin air channels leading from the part to what is the bottom of the mold__but will become the top of the mold during your plastic pour.
You will end up with parts that have no flashing whatsoever at the seam. If you do your air channels small enough at the point it touches the part, the tabs will be simple to clip and file off.
Working in giftware, I always provided the master plastic casting for the client to make production molds from.
These techniques need practice, just like any other skill you want to acquire. Of course it depends on your needs, whether the effort is worthwhile to you.
Above in the main body of this page you can see finished castings done with this method:
>Miniature barrels
>Santa riding buffalo
>bronze jaguar
>Willy Whitten Sculpture sign.

Well, I have finished the sculpture aspect of the new piece I am doing; the figure is mounted in the saddle, all his clothing complete, his feet in the stirrups and the reins in hand. The mount is decked out with saddle bags, bedrolls, a knife, a long gun and rope lariat. Next is the landscape. I have more plants than I will use already, so it is just making the actual ground for the diorama, and placing all the pieces in place.
